Owner - Grip Consulting
Director - Grip Potential Ltd
I specialise in the slip resistance testing of flooring, assessment of pedestrian slip risk, and the investigation of fall accidents involving pedestrians. My time is typically spent certifying new flooring materials in house, assessing the risk of slipping on site, or dealing with slip injury claims. More recently, I am seeking opportunities to share what I know with others through training and public speaking.
I have a City and Guilds accredited "Factors in Accident Causation" qualification, a NEBOSH National General Certificate, and a BSc in Computational Physics. As a specialist operating in a narrow field, appropriate academic qualifications aren't always available. Happily, I am able to back up my academic endeavours with over ten years experience in the field of pedestrian falls and slip resistance.
I previously worked for a UKAS accredited laboratory conducting a wide range of tests on flooring products. I soon found myself conducting slip resistance tests extensively and after a little over a year decided to start my own company, Grip Potential Ltd. I was determined that Grip Potential should maintain the same level of accuracy, independence and impartiality as my previous employer, but provide a service that was less expensive, more flexible, and offered faster turnaround times. Grip Potential's core service was on site slip resistance testing, but soon expanded to provide a more holistic on-site slip risk assessment, in house slip certification and expert witness services.
I started Grip Consulting in 2018 to provide a better framework for my aspirations of an expanded consulting service, separate to the core on-site slip testing service that Grip Potential was built around. I am currently working towards developing Grip Consulting's offering to include an IOSH accredited CPD course, in house floor product testing to sit alongside current slip resistance certification, and access consulting services.
I have been a member of the UK Slip Resistance Group since 2010 and continue to help to further its aims whenever I can. The UKSRG is the UK's leading independent authority on slip resistance and is responsible for producing the guidelines which describe the UK regulator's (HSE's) preferred method of testing. I became a Technical Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in 2016 after completing my NEBOSH, and joined the Academy of Experts as a Practicing Member the same year.
I have conducted in excess of eight thousand BS 7976-2 'Pendulum' slip tests and risk assessments in my role as Slip Risk Consultant. In 2018 I took part in a "Pendulum operator proficiency test" involving forty laboratories around the world blind testing thirty sample surfaces. All of the results that I produced were acceptable. During my time at Grip Potential I have conducted works for many household brands such as Heinz, Thorntons, Bentley, Westfield/intu, and Nandos.
I presented at the UKSRG International Conference in 2016, the OneCPD Health and Safety Conference in 2017, and again in 2018. All generated positive feedback reflecting my pragmatic approach. It is always my aim to avoid unnecessary in depth technical discussion and instead distill the outcome of academic study to straightforward advice that may help the audience prevent slip accidents.
I am regularly involved in personal injury cases involving pedestrian falls and have produced in excess of fifty expert witness reports. Training provided by the Academy of Experts and the founding of Grip Consulting has seen an overhaul of my expert witness offering which now looks less like a Grip Potential report and more closely follows the model form agree by The Judicial Committee. I have given expert evidence in the High Court. Expert witness work continues to present my greatest challenges and is a source of immense satisfaction. I look forward to developing this aspect of my career as time goes on.
I am always keen to work with those looking to embrace safer and more widely accessible environments. Whether you are seeking advice on the meaning of an obscure slip resistance rating, or are seeking a guest speaker for a small safety group, I will be happy to help where I can.
