Job Roles & Experience
Slip Risk Consultant, Munro Instruments
Quality Assurance Manager, Munro Instruments
2019 to present
Grip Consulting and Grip Potential were absorbed by Munro Instruments in late 2019. I continue to provide the same services offered by Grip under the Munro banner, in addition to developing Munro's quality management systems. I am responsible for the slip resistance service arm of the Munro business ensuring that the same high standard of assessment is maintained.
My slip resistance and slip risk assessment experience spans a huge range of flooring types, environments, contaminants and circumstances. With ongoing works undertaken at Munro that experience continues to grow, expanding to cover a wider range of international slip testing standards and procedures.
Director, Grip Consulting
Slip Risk Consultant, Grip Consulting
2018 to 2019
I founded Grip Consulting to better serve consulting roles away from Grip Potential's core on-site risk assessment. Grip Consulting provided, in addition to expert witness services, anti-slip flooring certification and training to health and safety professionals in matters around pedestrian falls.
Director, Grip Potential Ltd
Slip Risk Consultant, Grip Potential Ltd
2009 to 2019
I founded Grip Potential with the aim of providing a fast, flexible, commercially focused version of existing test house's slip testing services, whilst maintaining the same levels of accuracy and impartiality. Tests have been conducted daily since incorporation, always to the highest standard required by a UK court of law. Grip Potential served many household UK brands with positive feedback.
My role in a company focused solely on independent slip testing was unusual in that it involved daily assessment of slip risks using the Pendulum, making me a highly experienced operator.
Laboratory Technician, SATRA
2007 to 2009
I was responsible for laboratory and field work at SATRA (Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association) Technology Centre, a reputable UKAS accredited test house. I worked as part of the floorcoverings team focused mainly on slip resistance. I conducted testing across a broad range of British and European standards, flooring and environments unsupervised. As a UKAS accredited laboratory SATRA were required to ensure staff were competent in conducting tests to the relevant standards. This experience provided me with a wider knowledge of flooring products, slip resistance, and the processes involved in conducting accurate testing to industry and British standards.
Factors in Accident Causation (City & Guilds Accredited)
National Training Services, 2016
The course focused on effective methodology to assess the circumstances of an accident, identify risks and hazards, and trace failings back through the chain of responsibility.
NEBOSH National General Certification (in Occupational Health and Safety)
This course provided a broad overview of H&S matters and associated law, risk assessment and risk management strategies.
BSc (Hons) Computational Physics
Nottingham Trent University, 2007
Computational physics requires detailed observation, measurement and understanding of complex physical systems so that they may be broken down into simple logical arguments.
UK Slip Resistance Group
Full Member since 2010
The UKSRG is a group dedicated to furthering the understanding of pedestrian slips. I regularly take part in UKSRG round robins, producing results in line with UKAS accredited laboratories. I am an active member of the UK Slip Resistance Group regularly taking part in group directed studies, presenting information to the group and sitting on various sub-committees. I have benefited from regular presentations to the Group from reputable experts on topics associated with slips.
Academy of Experts
Practising Member since 2016
The Academy of Experts was founded with the objective of providing a professional body for experts to establish and promote high objective standards. I have been elected as Full Member of the Academy of Experts, in the Practising Category as a Slip Risk Consultant. Academy practicing individual members must go through a rigorous vetting procedure meaning that The Academy’s members are accredited rather than merely checked. Full membership status is given to those with adequate relevant qualifications, adequate practical experience and solid experience of acting as an expert.
Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
Technical Member since 2016
Technical IOSH membership recognises the qualifications and competence needed by professionals working in a range of health and safety roles. Technical members must have a suitable level of experience in a health and safety role, as well as an accredited qualification. Synopsis of Case History
Dispute over flooring in wet leisure environment
I attended site several times to provide expert measurement of slip resistance at a privately owned, council run pool complex. In addition to numerous site visits I met regularly with legal teams, joint and opposing experts, and provided numerous reports. The case was heard at the High Court where I attended for a week and gave evidence orally.
Slip accident on contaminated concrete slab on construction site
Having previously attended site immediately after a nasty accident to conduct testing on the slab, I was later employed in an expert witness role to counter the opposing expert’s interpretation of the situation. The other side relied on assertions that the surface was smooth, and that the surface was slippery when wet. My own report showed that the surface was not smooth and that the surface was not slippery when wet. I was called to give evidence in court, and the matter was settled a few days before the listing.
Slip accident involving product certified by Grip Potential Ltd
A slip occurred on a product certified by Grip Potential as a ‘low risk of slip’ whilst in situ in Australia. I was initially asked to present an expert’s report on the material ramp. I was called to give evidence on the matter in court (via a video link), however the matter was settled immediately prior to the case commencing. My client, bound by a confidentiality clause, could only describe the result as “favourable”.
In addition to the above I have also provided expert reports for more than 75 cases. This does not include a similar number of occasions where I have produced CPR compliant slip accident reports for responsible parties in anticipation of a court case arising. I have conducted approximately 8,000 individual slip risk assessments and product certifications across approximately 750 sites since 2009.
